Full Description

This paper discusses the Green Bay Water Utility's position of zero tolerance for an outbreak of Cryptosporidium. The Water Commission established a goal of 6-log removal or inactivation of cryptosporidium. Two components to the solution were identified: optimization of the existing processes, and reinforcement of the disinfection or removal process. Conventional treatment processes were evaluated and narrowed down to microfiltration and ozonation. After performing a cost analysis and considering the oxidation effect ozone has on both organics and inorganics and the enhancement of disinfection and other treatment processes, it was determined that ozonation would be chosen to achieve the goal of 6-log protection.
