Full Description

A laboratory scale batch process was conducted to investigate the feasibility of ahybrid system of zero-valent iron (Fesup0/sup) with three different adsorbents for the removal ofnitrate (NOsub3/subsup-/sup) and ammonium ions (NHsub4/subsup+/sup) from aqueous solution. The maximum nitrateremoval was observed for Fesup0/sup-sepiolite hybrid system at 45C for 24 h reaction time. The rate of NOsub3/subsup-/sup removal increased with the increase in initial NOsub3/subsup-/sup concentration. NHsub4/subsup+/sup ions producedduring the denitrification process by Fesup0/sup were successfully removed by the adsorbents, withthe removal efficiency in the order of GAC sepiolite filtralite. Results of the present studysuggest that the use of hybrid systems could be a promising innovative technology forachieving simultaneous removal of NOsub3/subsup-/sup and NHsub4/subsup+/sup from aqueous solution.
