Full Description

Data from four large water systems in Utahwere used to assess the validity of monitoringfor Escherichia coli in lieu of Cryptosporidiumto assess source water vulnerability to Cryptosporidiumoocysts. In the geographic areareported on here, the participating water utilitiesconcluded that monitoring for the occurrence ofbacteria such as E. coli would not provide reliableinformation about the occurrence of pathogenicorganisms such as Cryptosporidium.Surrogates, though cheaper to analyze for,may not provide a good indication of theexposure to target pathogens. Water providersmay want to consider the findings thatare detailed here as they look for answersabout their own source water and futurerequirements, both from a cost perspectiveand the level of treatment that will berequired. For utilities, especially small systems, monitoring for pathogens may bemore expensive than monitoring for fecalbacteria but could pay off in terms ofreduced risk to public health and greaterpeace of mind.
