Full Description

Transport behavior of liquid borne particles was analyzed based on mechanisms investigated in previous studies for gasborne particles. First, an order of magnitude analysis for pneumatic transport was extended for transport of waterborne particles. Next the interaction between turbulent eddy and particle inertial effects were analyzed using Tchen's equations for particles with physical characteristics similar to those likely to be encountered in drinking water distribution systems. The last section summarizes results from previous studies on reentrainment of particles. The influence of pipe geometry and Reynold's number on the wall shear stresses are illustrated and the results may be used to estimate the flow velocities for design of flushing programs. Includes 26 references, figures.
