Full Description

Eighty-five groundwater wells from an American Water Works Service Company survey, which sampled wells from across the United States, were used in this study. These wells had complete bioassay results for the following 9 fecal contamination tests: cell culture, enterovirus, rotavirus, hepatitis A virus, Salmonella WG049, Escherichia coli C3000, Escherichia coli C, total coliform and Enterococci spp. Sixty-five abiotic parameters, 50 quantitative and 15 qualitative, were tested as possible candidate indices. In order to statistically evaluate the effectiveness of the qualitative parameters at distinguishing between low-risk and high-risk wells these parameters were assigned numeric values. Similar survey response terms were grouped into sub-categories and these sub-categories were assigned a numeric value based on their association with fecal contamination.
