Full Description

Inactivation of cesium chloride purified, bovine-derived Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts was studied at bench-scale using chlorine dioxide at 1 degree C. Experiments were conducted in 200 mL of 0.05 M phosphate buffer at pH 6 using a temperature controlled water bath. Infectivity of neonatal CD-1 mice was used for evaluation of oocyst viability following treatment. It was observed that a simple CT (applied dose x contact time) product of about 150 mg.min./L resulted in about 0.5 log-units of inactivation at 1 degree C. For a similar CT value, about two log-units of inactivation was observed at 22 degrees C.
