Full Description

A simple colorimetric method for the determination of total organic carbon (TOC), total carbon (TC), total inorganic carbon (TIC), and non-purgable inorganic carbon (NPOC) has been developed and applied to disinfection byproduct precursor monitoring. The new method results for TOC and NPOC correlate well to the established UV-Persulfate method. The new method will provide a cost-effective option for the treatment facility for routine organic monitoring and control. The estimated cost per test (expendables) for NPOC is less than $4 compared to upwards of $50 per test using a commercial lab. Results will be available within 3 hours. The test is of compact design; 25 tests can be digested simultaneously within 1 square foot of bench space. Final measurements are made on a conventional spectrophotometer or colorimeter, which most drinking water laboratories already possess. Includes 4 references, tables, figures.
