The objective of this research was to develop empirical models of permeate flux decline resulting from natural organic matter (NOM) deposition on the membrane surface. The empirical models are derived from theoretical considerations of NOM transport and NOM-membrane interactions, and calibrated using bench- and pilot-scale test data. Their utility is to provide another means of predicting membrane performance at larger scales of operation, which is also a goal of the Information Collection Rule effort. Flux decline data has been collected for three different scales of testing. The feedwater flow rate, Qf, was selected to achieve a crossflow velocity at the membrane surface of about 20 cm/s for each scale of testing. The applied feed pressure and flow rate were maintained at constant levels (within the ranges recommended by membrane manufacturers) for the duration of the tests to provide hydrodynamic similarity between each scale of testing. The three scales of testing include: stirred cell filtration tests; crossflow filtration tests; and, pilot tests. Includes 4 references.
