Full Description

Recently, attention has focused on the filter ripening period when high numbers of particles, particularly in the cryptosporidium size range, can pass through filters and potentially into supply. Previous work suggested that flow rate changes were inadvisable during filtration and could lead to particulate breakthrough. This has been brought to the attention of plant operators following recent cryptosporidium outbreaks. However, to date no work has been published that actually quantifies the effect in terms of filtrate particle counts. Experimental data are presented that show the effects of flow rate changes on filtrate particle counts for plants in the United Kingdom and the US. Includes 7 references, figures.
