This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the drivers for watershed-based performance standards. Project background information includes a brief overview of BWWB, the largestwater utility in the stateof Alabama, providingwater to over 675,000customers.It operates two reservoirsand two "run-of the river"water sources, withdevelopment mostlyprevalent in the CahabaRiver/Lake Purdywatershed. Challenges for watershed protection are presented, and the approach, or technical basis of the plan included: evaluate present operationat the Shades Mountainfilter plant relative tohistorical/existing waterquality conditions;evaluate point and non-pointsources that drive reservoir water quality (WQ);determine changes inwater quality that willsignificantly increase operation and maintenancecosts and/or necessitatemajor capitalimprovements;evaluate reservoir WQ(assimilative capacity); and,develop watershed protectionpolicy that minimizes the risk ofthe threshold identified in step 2being exceeded.
