Full Description

The electrochemical oxidation of water containing chloride (Clsup-/sup) ions has emerged as apotential disinfection and oxidation strategy in which the mixed oxidants, such as ozone, chlorine, and OH, are generated on-site (Kerwick et al., 2005). However, the formation ofharmful disinfection byproducts such as chlorate (ClOsub3/subsup-/sup) and perchlorate (ClOsub4/subsup-/sup) represents anundesirable side of this process. This study investigates the characteristic ofchlorate formation in electrochemical processes using Clsup-/sup. In detail, the effects of the followingparameters on chlorate formation were investigated: the mixed oxidants (Osub3/sub, HOCl/OClsup-/sup, and OH), dissolved organic carbon (DOC; 0, 1.5, and 2.2 mg Lsup-1/sup), pH values (3.6, 5.5, 7.0, 8.0, and9.0).
