Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by presenting a brief overview of the city of Ripon, California, and the challenges it's facing that include: increasing waterdemand;nitrate and arsenicoccurrence; and, costly disposal of highstrength brines. A brief overview of Sulfur Modified Iron: SMI-III is presented, along with an integrated nitrate and arsenicremoval pilot system, and the pilot system schematic. SMI-III pilot study objectives included: determine SMI-III mediaperformance including optimal empty bedcontact time[EBCT] andoptimal pH conditions; treated effluent nitrategoal- 36 mg/L as NOsub3/subsup-/sup, and8 mg/L as N;co-occurringcontaminant removal;operation withcoagulation/filtration; and, initially characterizeresiduals stream. Project phases included: Phase A- determine the operationalconditions, with respect to pHand EBCT that couldconsistently achieve the waterquality goals, andevaluate the treatment systemresiduals quantity and quality; Phase B - identify the optimal conditions for long-termoperation; and,Additional Testing - evaluate the impact of hydraulic loading rate (HLR). Study conclusions include the following:achieved 36 mg/L as NOsub3/subsup-/sup treatedwater nitrate goal at pH 6.0, EBCT of30 minutes;nitrate reduction and removal areindependent of raw waterconcentration;temperature is a key factor; and,SMI-III operated well with pHdepression and coagulation/filtration. Includes tables, figures.
