Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the problem statement on perchlorate concerning its use, contamination, toxicology, and characteristics. Traditional ex situ remediation technologies (e.g., air stripping, carbonadsorption, filtration) are ineffective. Alternatives were needed. This study examined the biological treatment offluidized bed bioreactors. A fluidized bed reactor (FBR) flow schematic is presented, along with fluidization of media, and a process involving three steps: Step 1, oxygen uptake; Step 2, nitrate biodegradation; and, Step 3, perchlorate biodegradation. Examples are presented of three full-scale nitrate/perchloratetreatment FBRs, along with a demonstration drinking water FBR plant in Rialto, California. Includes figures.
