Full Description

A twelve month pilot study on ultraviolet (UV) advanced oxidation was conducted by GreaterCincinnati Water Works as part of an international research collaboration includingthe Water Research Foundation. This study used a 55 gpm pilot unit consisting of asingle-lamp medium pressure reactor (MP) and an 8-lamp low pressure reactor (LP)operated under a constant feed of hydrogen peroxide (10 mg/L). The advancedoxidation process (AOP) was set to target an 80% degradation of atrazine and 55%degradation of MTBE under all testing conditions. The pilot influent alternatedbetween conventionally treated and post-GAC plant water to examine the effect ofvarying seasonal water quality. Seven contaminants of interest (atrazine, metolachlor, MTBE, MIB, ibuprofen, gemfibrozil and 17-a-ethynylestradiol) werespiked at the pilot unit on a quarterly basis. The energy requirements of the processwere captured reflecting fluctuations in water quality. Includes 3 references, table, figures.
