Full Description

This powerpoint presentation outlines two water reuse case studies. The fist case study presents water reuse opportunities within an existing bio-pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in North Carolina, which includes a modeling and economic evaluation ofwater reuse in cooling towers. The project objective was to identify and evaluate water reuse opportunitiesthat have a greater than 5% reduction in city waterconsumption at the facility. Experimental approach methods included: site water balance review;identifying options for reuse;evaluating technical feasibility; and, evaluating economic feasibility. The second case study presents a pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing facility inIreland, which includesAPI removal from wastewater and effluent reuse. Project objectives and scope included:designing a new treatment plantspecifically for API removal frompharmaceutical manufacturing plantwastewater and effluent reuse; and, developingcriteria for effluent reuse in coolingtowers - no APIs, low COD, low TDS,and low/no coliforms. APIs of concern are listed, along with wastewater characteristics and license limits; process flow diagram; the Ireland Manufacturing Plant; and, Pharma WWTP effluent results with respectto suitability for reuse in cooling towers. Conclusions indicate that: the combination of MBR+Ozone results incomplete API removal and a high quality reusableeffluent in cooling towers;need to blend effluent with city water toincrease COCs above 3;ozone effectively destroys APIs to non-detectablelevels, albeit at high dosages (60 ppm); requires adjustments to water chemistry; and, operate cooling tower at 3 cycles or lower or havesoftener backwash and RO reject bypass WWTP. Includes tables, figures.
