Full Description

Ozonation for the primary disinfection ofdrinking water is typically carried out usinga contactor consisting of multiple vertical orhorizontal chambers connected in series.Nonideal mixing conditions in these chamberscan strongly reduce the overall efficiencyof the disinfection process and canlead to excessive formation of disinfectionbyproducts such as bromate. This research is the first to use a new technique,three-dimensional laser-induced fluorescence(3D LIF), to visually and quantitativelyexamine the unsteady, three-dimensional flow and mixing inside an ozone contactor. This analysis provides information that hasnot been possible to obtain with traditionaltracer methods. The technique developed inthis study is a new tool for designing and optimizingozone contactors to achieve regulatorycompliance and is also expected to be highlyuseful when evaluating, optimizing, anddesigning other disinfection reactors. Includes 22 references, figures.
