Full Description

To make good decisions, you need gooddata. Unfortunately, conventional total coliformand Escherichia coli data may not provide anaccurate picture of system conditions becausethe current method to collect that data may notalways indicate the presence of contaminants. The authors found that increasing the samplevolume, and thus the analytical resolution, would enhance the usefulness of data obtainedthrough water quality monitoring. The new sampling method wouldincrease the effective sample size 200-fold, from 100 mL to 20 L. This straightforward,high-volume method was developed specificallyto provide higher resolution of theconcentration of total coliforms and E. coliin water. With this improved information, utilities can better characterize treatmentand system quality, determine the locationof microbial problems in the system, verifythat mitigation efforts were successful, andultimately make better decisions aboutresource allocation and systemmaintenance. Includes 14 references, tables, figure.
